Va Pu Kale was born on March 25, 1932 in Pune, Maharashtra. He completed his education from Fergusson College and Law College in Pune. He worked as a lawyer for some time before becoming a full-time writer and storyteller. He married Pratibha Kale, who was also a writer and a poet. They had two sons, Milind and Mandar.

Va Pu Kale started writing stories and novels in the 1950s. Some of his early works include Karmachari (Employee), Partner (Partner), Chimanrao (Chimanrao), and Vapurza (Bubble). He also wrote essays, travelogues, biographies, and children's books. He received several awards and honors for his literary contributions, such as the Sahitya Akademi Award, the Padma Shri, and the Maharashtra Gaurav Puraskar.
